Going through the European Union (EU) accession period, our country has been harmonizing with EU Acquis besides translating it as well. Within this framework, Coordination of Translation Department (CTD) has been established under Ministry of European Union organization. CTD coordinates the activities on translation of European Acquis to Turkish, conducts linguistic, technical and legal reviews on these translation in collaboration with the relevant public entities and institutions, as well as the activities for creation of an EU terminology database.
Turkish is going to be included among EU official languages once Turkey becomes an EU Member State. Multilinguism is a fundamental EU principal and EU presently has 23 official languages. Accordingly, one of the largest translation centers in the world, employing 1750 linguists, has been operating under European Commission.
The Competition was held on December 17, 2011 in Istanbul. Senior students from 24 universities and 34 departments participated in the Competition. Participating students were determined by the universities. A total of 93 students competed in this Competition, 55 in English, 19 in French and 19 in German languages.
A text about EU was translated to Turkish in the Competition. The source text was prepared in one of EU’s business languages, English, French and German.
Evaluation Commission for EU Translation Competition, constituting from the members of EU Ministry, evaluates the competition. Evaluation criteria include competency on source and target languages, correct usage of EU terminology and sticking with grammar rules.
